Difficulty getting an erection firm enough for sex
You may want sex but struggle to get an erection, or find that it never becomes firm enough for penetration. This can be a symptom of erectile dysfunction, particularly when it keeps happening.
Sildenafil and tadalafil may help by supporting blood flow during sexual stimulation. A physician checks whether medication is appropriate and whether the symptoms need further assessment.
Losing an erection during sex
Getting an erection does not rule out ED. You may become firm initially, then lose firmness before or during intercourse. Stress, health conditions and medicines can all contribute.
Prescription ED medication can help some men maintain an erection. It is not a promise of longer sex or a treatment for every sexual concern: ejaculating sooner than you want is a different problem and should be discussed separately.
Describe what happens, not just the label
Note whether the problem starts before penetration, occurs during sex, appears only with a partner or also happens during masturbation. A concrete description is more useful than simply checking “yes” for ED.
Track timing and associated changes
A sudden onset after a new medicine, surgery, illness or stressful event tells a different story from gradual change over years. Changes in urinary symptoms, sensation, ejaculation or libido also matter.
Symptoms that should not wait
Call 911 for chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath or stroke symptoms. Penile injury, severe pain or an erection lasting more than four hours requires urgent care.
